The best battery charger for AGM batteries is one that knows it is charging an AGM battery. AGM batteries are sealed, they charge best at a slightly higher voltage than flooded batteries, and they do not forgive overcharging, because you cannot top them up with water. A charger with a proper AGM mode, temperature compensation and a safe float stage will keep an AGM battery healthy for years. A cheap manual charger, or one set to the wrong mode, can quietly shorten its life. Not sure which type is in your car? Our AGM vs flooded battery guide shows how to tell.

Why AGM batteries need the right charger

AGM stands for absorbent glass mat. The electrolyte is held in fiberglass mats rather than sloshing freely, which makes the battery spill-proof, vibration-resistant and good at handling the repeated cycling of start-stop cars. The trade-off is sensitivity to charging voltage.

  • AGM batteries want a slightly higher charging voltage. CTEK, for example, charges at 14.4V in normal mode and 14.7V in AGM mode. OPTIMA lists a charging range of 13.8 to 15.0 volts for its AGM batteries.
  • They need a gentle float. OPTIMA recommends float charging at 13.2 to 13.8 volts and no more than 1 amp.
  • A gel setting is not an AGM setting. OPTIMA warns that “gel” or combined “gel/AGM” modes can undercharge its batteries over time.
  • Too much current causes heat. Canbat suggests keeping the charge rate at or below about 10% of the battery’s amp-hour rating, and OPTIMA recommends a maximum of 10 amps for its batteries. Our guide to what size battery charger you need walks through that math for common batteries.

The SC1281 earns the top spot because it does what an AGM owner needs most: you tell it the battery is AGM. Its battery type button switches between standard, AGM and gel profiles, as the SC1281 manual describes, so the charger is not guessing. It charges at 2 or 6 amps, then drops into an automatic maintain mode that tops the battery up only when it needs it.

Beyond charging, it has a 12 to 30 amp boost, a 100 amp engine-start setting, a desulfation mode and a built-in battery and alternator tester. On Schumacher’s product page it is listed as UL Listed and cETLus Listed, with a 1-year warranty. On Keepa it has more than eight years of tracked history, a 4.5-star rating on a review count that grows steadily, and an Amazon price that held flat for most of the year, with Amazon itself selling it when we checked.

What we like

  • A selectable AGM mode, not just an AGM-compatible label
  • Automatic maintain mode, so it can stay connected
  • UL Listed and cETLus Listed
  • Built-in battery and alternator tester

Watch out for

  • Only a 1-year warranty
  • Temperature compensation is not listed
  • If it powers up without a button press, the manual says it defaults to the gel setting, so check the mode before you walk away

Schumacher has been making battery chargers in the US for decades, and the SC1280 is one of its most popular automatic models. It charges 12V batteries at up to 15 amps, 6V batteries at 2 amps, and has a 3 amp charge-and-maintain setting for smaller batteries and long-term connection. Schumacher lists it as compatible with standard, AGM, gel and deep-cycle batteries, and it includes a desulfation mode and a float stage.

The SC1280 is our pick for large AGM batteries because 15 amps stays near the 10% guideline only on big batteries of roughly 150Ah, and still charges a 100Ah deep-cycle AGM much faster than a 4 amp charger. On a typical car AGM, use the 3 amp setting instead. If you own an OPTIMA, stay within OPTIMA’s 10 amp maximum by using the lower setting. On Amazon it has a large, steady review base, sells steadily, and Amazon itself sells it at a stable price.

What we like

  • Much faster on large AGM and deep-cycle batteries
  • Handles 6V and 12V
  • 3 amp setting for smaller batteries and maintaining
  • Strong value for the amperage

Watch out for

  • 15 amps is too much for a typical car AGM; use the 3 amp setting
  • No published temperature compensation
  • Only a one-year warranty
  • Not for lithium batteries

Battery Tender Plus

Best for: keeping an AGM battery full in a stored car, classic, motorcycle or boat

Battery Tender is the brand that made “battery tender” a household phrase, and the Plus is its classic 1.25 amp model. It uses a four-stage cycle of initialization, bulk, absorption and float maintenance, adjusts its charging for temperature, and is listed as compatible with AGM, gel and flooded lead-acid batteries from 14 to 80Ah. It is designed to stay connected for months, which is exactly what a stored AGM battery needs. It is also our top pick for the best battery maintainer for winter storage.

It carries a ten-year limited warranty, the longest of our picks. On Amazon it is one of the most-reviewed models in its category and has been one of the steadiest sellers in its category, with Amazon selling it directly at a stable price. The limitation is speed: 1.25 amps is meant to maintain, not to recover a flat battery quickly. Pair it with a stronger charger if you also need to bring dead batteries back.

What we like

  • Built for months of unattended connection
  • Temperature-compensated four-stage charging
  • AGM compatible, simple to use
  • Ten-year warranty

Watch out for

  • Too slow to recharge a large flat battery
  • No dedicated AGM switch or reconditioning mode

How to charge an AGM battery safely

  • Confirm the battery type. Look for “AGM” on the label, then select the charger’s AGM mode. Do not use a gel setting.
  • Pick a sensible rate. Around 10% of the battery’s Ah rating is a good target; for most car AGM batteries that is 4 to 10 amps.
  • Charge in a ventilated area and connect the clamps before plugging the charger in.
  • Let the charger finish. A smart charger will step down to float automatically.
  • Watch the temperature. OPTIMA says some warmth is normal, but stop if the battery becomes hot to the touch.
  • Deeply discharged? If the battery is below about 10.5 volts, many smart chargers will not detect it. Use a charger with a force or manual mode, or follow the battery maker’s guidance.
AGM and lithium are not the same. Some newer cars and power sports vehicles use lithium (LiFePO4) starter batteries. None of the three chargers above has a lithium mode, so check your battery label before charging.

What we left out, and why

  • CTEK MXS 5.0. A well-known charger with a dedicated 14.7V AGM mode, temperature compensation and an IP65 rating, and steady demand on Amazon. But we could not confirm a North American UL or ETL safety listing in CTEK’s published specs, and we do not recommend on assumptions. If CTEK publishes one, we will revisit.
  • NOCO GENIUS10 and GENIUS5. Popular chargers with AGM and lithium modes and temperature compensation, but we could not find a UL or ETL safety listing in NOCO’s published specs, and they had no new offers on Amazon when we checked.
  • Basic manual chargers. Without automatic float, they can overcharge a sealed AGM battery if left connected.
  • Unbranded “AGM repair” chargers. Many list aggressive pulse-repair claims without publishing charging voltages or manuals.

Even the best battery charger for AGM batteries has limits. If your real worry is a dead battery away from home, a charger will not help in the parking lot. See our best jump starters for cold weather and whether a jump starter can damage your car.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best battery charger for AGM batteries?
Our top pick is the Schumacher SC1281. It has a selectable AGM mode, 2 to 6 amp charging with an automatic maintain mode, a desulfation mode, and UL and cETLus listings. For large AGM batteries, the Schumacher SC1280 is faster, and for storage the Battery Tender Plus is a simple, long-warrantied maintainer.
What battery charger do I need for an AGM battery?
Choose a smart charger with an AGM mode or an AGM-compatible profile, automatic float maintenance and ideally temperature compensation. Size it at around 10% of the battery’s amp-hour rating.
Is it okay to use a trickle charger on an AGM battery?
Only if it is a smart maintainer that switches to float. A basic trickle charger that never shuts off can overcharge a sealed AGM battery, and that damage cannot be reversed.
What amp do you need to charge an AGM battery?
A charge rate of about 10% of the battery’s Ah rating is a safe guide, so roughly 4 to 10 amps for most car AGM batteries. OPTIMA recommends a maximum of 10 amps for its AGM batteries.
What voltage should an AGM battery be charged at?
Most AGM chargers use around 14.4 to 14.8 volts during charging; CTEK’s AGM mode uses 14.7V. OPTIMA lists 13.8 to 15.0 volts for charging and 13.2 to 13.8 volts for float.
Can a regular charger charge an AGM battery?
Often yes, if it is a quality automatic charger. OPTIMA says most quality chargers and maintainers work with its batteries, but recommends a microprocessor-controlled charger with an AGM setting and warns against gel modes.
Can I use a gel setting for an AGM battery?
It is not recommended. Gel settings use a lower voltage, and OPTIMA warns they can undercharge AGM batteries over time.
