The best motorcycle battery tender is a small, smart maintainer matched to a small battery. Motorcycle batteries hold far less energy than car batteries, and an alarm, a clock, a GPS tracker or the bike’s own electronics can drain one in a few weeks of sitting. A good tender keeps the battery topped up with a gentle current, switches to a safe float once it is full, and, if your bike runs a lithium battery, uses a charging profile made for lithium. Get those basics right and the bike starts on the first press after a long winter.

Does a motorcycle need a battery tender?
If you ride every few days, probably not. The charging system tops the battery up as you ride. A tender earns its place when the bike sits: over winter, during a long trip away, or simply between occasional weekend rides. Motorcycle batteries are small, so the slow loss of charge that a car battery shrugs off can flatten a bike battery surprisingly quickly, especially if the bike has an alarm, a tracker, heated-grip controllers or a modern ECU that draws power while parked.
Letting a lead-acid battery sit discharged also shortens its life, because sulfate crystals build up on the plates. A tender stops that from happening by holding the battery at full charge. And a full battery is far harder to freeze than a flat one, which matters for bikes stored in cold garages. If you also store a car or truck for the season, our guide to the best battery maintainer for winter storage covers bigger batteries. And for the day a battery goes flat away from home, our best motorcycle jump starter guide matches portable packs to lead-acid and lithium bike batteries.
How we chose the best motorcycle battery tender
To find the best motorcycle battery tender, we started with the best-selling powersports maintainers on Amazon, checked each one’s price history, sales history and reviews, and then confirmed specifications and warranty terms with the manufacturers.
1. Battery Tender Junior 750mA — best overall
Battery Tender Junior 750mA (021-0123)
Best for: most motorcycles, scooters and ATVs with lead-acid or AGM batteries
This is the tender most riders picture when they hear the name, and for good reason. The Junior delivers 750mA at 12V, which is a gentle rate for small motorcycle batteries, and Battery Tender rates it for 12V batteries from 3 to 30Ah. That covers most motorcycles, from small commuters to many touring bikes. Its four-stage program runs a health check, a bulk charge, an absorption stage and then float maintenance, and it adjusts its charging voltage with the temperature.
It works with flooded, AGM, gel and sealed maintenance-free batteries, and it comes with both alligator clips and a ring-terminal lead. For a full-size car AGM battery, see our best battery charger for AGM batteries. Most riders bolt the ring terminals to the battery once, tuck the connector somewhere easy to reach, and simply plug in whenever the bike is parked. On Amazon it is one of the best-selling maintainers in its category, with a long, steady review history, and its price has been stable. The five-year warranty is generous for the price.

What we like
- Right-sized 750mA output for motorcycle batteries
- Temperature compensation
- Ring-terminal lead for plug-in convenience
- Long track record and five-year warranty
Watch out for
- No lithium mode — do not use it on a lithium battery
- Slow at refilling a fully flat battery
- Rated up to 30Ah, so check very large touring batteries
2. Battery Tender Junior 800mA Lead Acid & Lithium — best for lithium batteries
Battery Tender Junior 800mA Lead Acid & Lithium (022-0199-DL-WH)
Best for: bikes with lithium (LiFePO4) batteries, or riders with both battery types
Lithium motorcycle batteries are popular because they are light and crank hard, but they should not be maintained with a lead-acid-only charger. This version of the Junior adds a selectable mode for lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries alongside its AGM, flooded and gel settings, so one tender covers a lithium sport bike and a lead-acid cruiser in the same garage.
It charges at 800mA, runs a four-step charging program that ends in float maintenance, and includes spark-proof clamps with short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection. Both alligator clips and a ring-terminal lead are included, with a 12-foot output cord. On Amazon it has built a solid review history, sells steadily, and its price has been stable. It carries the same five-year warranty as the standard Junior.

What we like
- True LiFePO4 mode as well as lead-acid modes
- One tender for mixed garages
- Ring terminals and clips included
- Five-year warranty
Watch out for
- You must select the right mode before charging
- Battery Tender does not publish an Ah range for this model
- Not for other lithium chemistries — LiFePO4 only
3. OptiMate 4 Quad Program Premium Edition — best for BMW, Triumph and CAN-bus bikes
OptiMate 4 Quad Program Premium Edition (TM631-PR)
Best for: BMW, Triumph and other bikes that charge through a CAN-bus accessory socket
OptiMate, made by TecMate, is a long-established name among European bike owners, and the OptiMate 4 is built for a problem many BMW riders run into. On bikes with a CAN-bus electrical system, the accessory socket can switch off when the ignition is off, so an ordinary tender plugged into it stops charging. OptiMate states that this model is BMW CAN-bus compatible and activates automatically, and the Premium Edition includes an O-19 adapter cable for BMW and Triumph 12V sockets.
It runs a nine-step program at 1.25 amps, is rated for 4 to 30Ah lead-acid batteries and 2 to 15Ah lithium batteries, and includes a smart desulfation stage for lead-acid batteries. TecMate describes the case as weatherproof and rated for use down to −40°F, with a three-year limited warranty. It has far fewer Amazon reviews than the Battery Tender models, though they are consistently positive, and its price has been stable. It is the one to buy if you charge through your bike’s socket.

What we like
- Built for BMW CAN-bus sockets
- BMW/Triumph socket adapter included
- Supports both lead-acid and lithium
- Desulfation stage for neglected lead-acid batteries
Watch out for
- Much more expensive than the Battery Tender Junior
- Smaller review base on Amazon
- Shorter three-year warranty

What size battery tender does a motorcycle need?
For almost every motorcycle, a tender of about 0.75 to 1.25 amps is the right size. Battery Tender’s own guidance recommends 1.25 amps for standard and cruiser bikes, and up to 5 amps only for touring bikes with large batteries. That fits the long-standing rule of charging a battery at about one tenth of its amp-hour capacity: a 12Ah sport bike battery is happy at around 1 amp, and even a large touring battery of around 30Ah is comfortable at 1.25 amps for maintenance.
Avoid using a big car battery charger on a motorcycle battery unless it has a low-amp setting and lists small batteries in its rated range. Our guide on what size battery charger you need explains the amp math for every vehicle type.
Lithium batteries need extra care. Use a tender with a dedicated LiFePO4 mode, never run a desulfation or reconditioning mode on a lithium battery, and check the battery maker’s own charging recommendations, since some lithium batteries have specific voltage limits.
How to connect a motorcycle battery tender
- Install the ring-terminal lead. With the ignition off, bolt the red ring to the positive (+) terminal and the black ring to the negative (−) terminal. Route the connector to a spot you can reach without removing the seat.
- Choose the right mode. On models with a selector, set lead-acid or lithium before you plug in.
- Connect the bike, then the wall. Plug the tender into the bike lead first, then into the outlet.
- Watch the light. The status light shows when it is charging and when it has switched to float.
- Unplug before you ride. Disconnect the tender before starting the engine, and never ride off with the lead still plugged in.
If you ever need to start a bike or car with a flat battery before you have time to charge it, our how to use a jump starter guide covers the safe sequence.
What we left out, and why
- NOCO GENIUS1. A capable 1 amp charger with a lithium mode, but it had no new offers available on Amazon when we checked.
- High-amp car chargers. Many are rated only for larger batteries and are more than a small motorcycle battery needs.
- Unbranded “trickle chargers”. Many lack a regulated float stage, published specs or a real warranty, so we could not verify they are safe to leave connected.
A tender keeps a healthy battery healthy, but it cannot bring back a battery that is worn out. If your bike battery will not hold its charge after a full cycle on the tender, have it tested and replaced before riding season starts.
